MEXICO CITY – Mexican baseball officials announced Monday that two of their players tested positive for Covid-19 days before they were scheduled to depart for the Tokyo Olympics.
“At the start of the gathering of Mexican baseball selection two positive asymptomatic cases of Covid-19 were discovered,” said the Mexican Baseball Federation, and the Mexican Baseball League. They also stated that Sammy Solis and Hector Velazquez were the players.
Two pitchers who are part of the Acereros de Monclova were put in isolation “immediately” in their hotel rooms, where the national team gathers.
Monday’s PCR testing was used to test all national team members. Training in Mexico City’s Alfredo Harp Helu stadium was cancelled.
Mexico’s baseball team has stayed on schedule to depart for Tokyo on Wednesday, having qualified for the Olympics for the first time.
The team is currently in Group A and will face the Dominican Republic on the 30th of July, followed by Japan the day after that.
